Moving house can be a dangerous business. Cuts, ankle injuries and back strains are just some of common injuries people face when moving house. However, with a little know-how these injuries are preventable.
1. Use the proper equipment
Before you move anything, test the weight of the item. Do not attempt to lift heavy items without using a trolley or dolly. Straps can also be helpful for securing boxes and items to the dolly or to assist in lifting larger items.
If you need to reach items in high-up areas, always make sure you have a sturdy ladder that can support your body weight and the weight of the items you are carrying. For added security ask someone to hold the ladder for you while you are using it.
2. Be careful when lifting
The easiest way to injure your back is through incorrect lifting. If you must lift anything without a dolly, always make sure you employ the correct technique:
- Bend your knees, not your back
- Keep your back straight
- Keep your head up
- Carry the load close to your body.
3. Be aware of your surroundings
Before you start your move, organise the space so the high-traffic areas such as hallways are clear of any obstacles – including pets and children!
Remember when carrying a box, you often can’t see where you’re stepping so think about the path you’ll need to take.
- Will the path contain cords, slippery areas, stairs, curbs or uneven surfaces?
- Will you have to open doors?
- How far will you have to carry the box?
An assembly line is often a great way to avoid collisions and traffic jams. However, make sure if you’re passing boxes and items to another person that you know they have a firm grip before letting go.
4. Wear proper clothing
Always wear clothes that fit comfortably and don’t have excess fabric or loose sleeves that can catch on something. Also make sure you wear durable, supportive footwear, with good grip, particularly if surfaces can become wet. On hot days, protect yourself from the sun with a well –fitted hat.
5. Keep hydrated and refuel
Make sure you have plenty of water and food on hand, particularly in hot weather.
6. Keep a first aid kit handy
It’s a good idea to have a basic first aid kit handy with band aids, paracetamol and antiseptic lotion for minor cuts, sores and blisters. Also make sure that everyone knows where the closest working telephone is, particularly if your landline has been disconnected.
