Town of East Fremantle Case Study

Town of East Fremantle Case Study

The Town of East Fremantle is a local government area located 17km south-west of Perth’s CBD. The town borders the Swan River and has a close-knit community of approximately 8,000 residents.

Building challenges and existing records storage at the local East Fremantle Town Hall

The local council building had recently undergone an office refurbishment, which mean that its archives were transferred from its storage facility to its basement.

Unfortunately the building where the documents were stored had deteriorated and the environmental setting did not comply with the State Records Principles and Standards (2002) nor the State Records Office requirements. At the same time, the building posed many health and safety hazards including low ceilings, overhead pipes, mould due to damp conditions, dust, poor ventilation and inadequate fire prevention and safe egress.

Grace Information Management was engaged to safely remove and re-house the valuable archival material into a clean and inert environment for cataloguing, repacking and secure long-term storage for future access.

Our Case Study describes the unique challenges and solutions faced by our archive management experts and the local government team as they developed and implemented a plan for the safe relocation and cataloguing of this important material.
