Trees for Containers: Restoring biodiverse forests and protect endangered wildlife

Grace is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of our Trees for Containers initiative, which we launched in 2021. Through our valued partnership with Greenfleet, we have funded the planting and ongoing maintenance of a native tree for every international import container consigned to Grace throughout 2021 and 2022.

During this period, the scheme funded the planting of over 2,500 trees at Dangerbridge in Queensland. Located on Kabi Kabi Country, Dangerbridge is an integrated revegetation and grazing property situated just north of Brisbane. This collaborative effort between Grace and Greenfleet exemplifies our commitment to ecosystem restoration and climate action.

The significance of this forest extends beyond its carbon capture capabilities. It serves to expand wildlife habitats from the nearby Coloola National Park and plays a crucial role in enhancing the habitat and food tree abundance for Queensland’s endangered koala population.

To conclude the Trees for Containers initiative, Grace representatives Renee Darby and Nancy Oberholzer from the Brisbane international and corporate services team met with local representative Alex Paddock from Greenfleet for a guided tour of the site to witness the remarkable results of the project and search for Kirra the koala.

Trees for Containers: Restoring biodiverse forests and protect endangered wildlife

This property spans over 90 hectares, with nearly 90% of it already restored to native forest to enhance biodiversity and provide a thriving habitat for wildlife and avian species. Today, the property boasts an impressive variety of 550 different species, including the Grey Fantail, Rhinoceros Beetles, Golden Whistler, Eastern Grey Kangaroo, Lace Monitor, and Swamp Wallaby, to name just a few.

Establishing protected habitat for the region’s koalas has been one of the key environmental objectives of this project. By strategically selecting tree species such as the Forest Red Gum, a vital tree for koalas in terms of food and habitat, the aim is to provide a sustainable forest that can support koala populations in the years to come. In 2021 alone, the planting efforts at Dangerbridge contributed to the restoration of over 120 hectares of koala habitat across the eastern states of Australia.

“This was an incredible experience and an exceptionally rewarding day, despite the hot sun. Witnessing the significance of this project for our environment and wildlife and learning about Grace’s contribution to such a successful and meaningful project, was truly inspiring.” Nancy expressed her enthusiasm; “The project team demonstrated remarkable passion and expertise across all aspects of the initiative. We also had the opportunity to discover how koalas in the area are rehabilitated, with any sick or injured animals being transported to Australia Zoo for recovery before returning to their natural habitat.”

Grace is proud of the positive impact we have made and will continue to make. Through our partnerships and projects like the one at Dangerbridge, we strive to combat climate change, support wildlife recovery, and contribute to the preservation of Australia’s remarkable ecosystems. The trees planted by Greenfleet on behalf of Grace at Dangerbridge will contribute to the growth of a native biodiverse forest that benefits from legal protection for at least the next 100 years.
