With summer just around the corner, you may be considering or planning on moving to a new home. But, did you know that summer is the busiest season for relocating. Why? The days are longer meaning there is more time to get things done, families are also taking advantage of the school holiday to change their children’s schools and many workplaces slowing down for the quiet season. Below are 7 tips to help you relocate this summer.

1. Plan your summer move early

We all know how stressful moving can be, to help ease your stress make sure you plan early. Give yourself a good start and begin your preparations as soon as possible. If you’re moving to a newly built home, make sure you speak to your builder about the expected completion and move-in dates then work around that. If you don’t know where to start, check our Moving Checklist, which consist of simple tips that you can start 8 weeks prior to the move.

2. Hire a Professional Moving Company well before the move

Summer is also the busiest period for professional moving companies and this increased demand means higher cost and reduced availability. We recommend booking a trustworthy company, like Grace, well in advance. For over 100 years, we’ve helped millions of Aussies move locally, interstate and abroad. Our team of moving consultants can answer your questions, address your concerns and help you focus on settling into your new home while we handle all the rest. 3. Avoid untrustworthy movers

Untrustworthy movers are known to take advantage of the increased demand for removalists in summer. Key tips to help you avoid untrustworthy movers include:

  • Read and understand the contract as well as their insurance offerings
  • Shop around and compare quotes from multiple removalists
  • Read customer reviews
  • Check if they’re a member of the Australia Furniture Removers Association (AFRA)
  • Understand what’s included and what’s not included in the price

4. Choose a weekday rather than a weekend

A good way to save money is by choosing to move on a weekday rather than a weekend. Also, try to avoid booking your move at the start or end of summer, as these are usually the busiest periods for removalists.

5. Forego self-packing and ask your removals to pack for you

Packing is the most time-consuming tasks you’ll have to undertake when moving, so why not forego self-packing all together and get someone to do it for you? Grace provides a comprehensive packing service for all interstate and international moves. Our moving team will professionally handle and pack your belongings for you, create a detailed inventory and ensure that your items are fully protected so they arrive safely to your new home. We’re also committed to sustaining the environment, so majority of our packing materials are made from recycled material and are reusable.

6. If you’ve chosen to self-pack, be aware of heat sensitive items

Of course, we understand that sometimes you just want pack and load your belongings your way. If you decide to self-pack, be aware that some items are sensitive to the heat. This includes small electronic devices such as stereos, laptops and tablets as well as plants, perishable food, media disks and candles. For more self-packing tips, check out our Self-Packing Guide.

7. Stay safe in the summer heat

Moving homes during summer can be challenging and dangerous because of the heat and the sun, to help you stay safe when moving in summer, we suggest you:

  • Start early and avoid moving between 11am to 4pm as this is usually the hottest time of the day
