Moving can be a really exciting time; an opportunity for a fresh start and the beginning of an exciting chapter. While we generally know that the move is drawing closer, it’s hard to be overly prepared for moving as daily life often gets in the way. Getting a head start and packing your house three weeks before moving day can actually make the situation more stressful. We’ve got 8 handy packing tips to help you prepare and lighten the last minute load.
Make a list
This may seem like common sense, but most people chose to rely on their memory. There’s a lot of logistics and coordination on moving day and it’s easy for little, yet crucial tasks to fall through the cracks. Write a go-to list of all your moving day tasks to make sure you stay on top of who and what’s going where.
Proper packing
Second-hand boxes might seem like a saving, but in actual fact, they can end up costing you more. Not only does it make the move more challenging for our removalists, it also puts your items in jeopardy. Using sturdy boxes, protective wrapping paper and proper packing tape keeps your much-loved items safe and sound.
Label the boxes
At the time of packing, you might remember that the linen is the third box against the wall in the hallway. That is, until you pack another 10 boxes or someone moves the box. You’ll be amazed at how quickly boxes pile up and when they all look the same, it can be hard to find what you’re looking for. Labelling not only helps you unpack, but it’ll help your removalists pack the truck and put things in place at the other end.
Marvellously methodical
When it comes to packing, a plan is really make or break. Start with low use areas like the laundry cupboard, book shelves and spare rooms and systematically work your way through to high use areas like the bedroom and kitchen areas.
Calm kids
Moving can be challenging for anyone and the change in routine can be especially tricky for kids. Keep them informed from the beginning and involve them in tasks that make them feel part of the process. Before the move, show them photos of their new house so their imaginations can run wild.
Wrangling whitegoods
Because you’re not packing them as such, whitegoods often tend to get forgotten as they’re the last port of call. Get prepared and unplug the fridge the night before, giving it time to defrost. Make sure your washing machine and dishwasher are disconnected and the hoses drained to avoid any water damage.
Don’t forget furry
Don’t forget to pack a ‘go’ bag for your pets. Make sure to include their favourite toys, familiar objects and a treat to keep them occupied. Pets, like people, find moving unsettling and it can take them a little while to get settled in their new territory. Make sure you leave enough room in the car to transport your pet safely and comfortably.
Your go-to bag
After a hard day moving, the last thing you’ll feel like doing is rummaging to find clean sheets, a toothbrush and a towel. Pack an overnight bag of all the essentials you’ll need after a long day. It will make your first morning in your new home a lot less logistical. Don’t forget the charger!
