Toys

One of the most common clutter culprits in our homes are kids toys. If you’re holding on to toys your kids once played with but have now grown out of, it might be time to start getting rid of them.

Not only is an excess of toys making our homes more cluttered, overstimulating children can also make it harder for them to focus on the things they should be learning, such as reading or counting. Having less toys also allows children to explore their creativity and imagination.

Donate to charity

Donating your kid’s old toys is a great way to teach them about the value of giving to others. By donating old toys to charity, kids will learn the importance of giving back when they can and sharing the fun with others. Your kids will thrive on knowing that their once-loved toys are helping children with fewer of their own. There are a number of charity donation bins you can donate the toys to. Your local children’s hospital or daycare centre might also be looking for items of goodwill.

Make it fun

If your kids are struggling with the idea of parting ways with their toys, make the act of throwing them away more enjoyable. Try hosting a garage sale in your kid’s rooms where you can purchase their unwanted toys from them. You can also try spreading all of the toys out on the floor and sorting them based on the kid’s favourites and age appropriateness.

Let them choose

You might have a rough idea of what toys your kids like the most and which they hardly spend time playing with, but your kids will have different attachments to particular toys you’re not aware of. To avoid tantrums and tears, let them choose which toys they get rid of. You might find that the toys you hold a sentimental attachment to are actually easily dismissed by the kids.

Put them in storage

If you’re not ready to get rid of the toys completely or if you’d like to hold on to them for future children, young cousins, nieces or nephews, consider self storage. Not only will you have your children’s old toys on hand when there’s a new kid in the family, you’ll also be able to keep them protected and dust free.

Mobile self storage is a great way to get the kids involved to. At Grace, we’ll drop off our storage module which you can pack at your own leisure, letting the kids help in choosing which toys they say goodbye to. Once you’ve filled the box, we’ll pick it up and store it in one of our secure facilities until you need it again.
