Kitchen now a major selling point

With MasterChef: The Professionals and My Kitchen Rules now in full swing you can expect your kitchen to have a major impact when selling your house.

David Crane, chief executive of Winning Appliances, says stainless steel products account for 63 per cent of oven sales and, with My Kitchen Rules and MasterChef: The Professionals getting nightly viewers of 1.6 million and 700,000 respectively, you can expect the trend to continue.

Developer Lend Lease calls it the Masterchef phenomena. When they asked buyers what they wanted from a new apartment in Melbourne, 77 per cent rated the kitchen as most important.

The kitchen was ''king'' for many purchasers, said the general manager of development, apartments, Ben Coughlan, at Lend Lease.

''The kitchen is now the most important room in the apartment, and young professionals are dining at home, and practising the dishes they learned about on television.

Kitchens are now a deal maker for many home buyers. Phrases such as, new sleek stone kitchen with Miele oven and gas cooktops, great size kitchen with stone slab bench tops, Caesar Stone gas integrated European kitchen and modern chef kitchen have become major selling points for many real estate agents.
